My Conquer Queen Series – How The Hell I Am Doing It. Or At Least Pretending I Am.
As a wife, mother of two incredibly active children, business owner, director of my local real estate board, multi committee member,volunteer, mentor and friend I am often asked, “How the hell do you do it all?”
Part of me just wants to insert an “I don’t know, I just do” line here. But I can’t or this post would be redundant and I would practically hear the eyes rolling.
The truth of the matter is, I am doing it. So let’s talk about how.
Time Management and Being the CEO of Your Day (and your life)
Very early on in my real estate career I went to a few seminars for real estate professionals and there always seemed to be one theme etched in all of them. Time management.
Being in an industry such as real estate it is very easy to lose control of your time and find yourself at the end of the day ( even though you felt busy ) wondering what the heck you actually did.
For the first year of my career I was home with a new born baby. So the majority of my work involved the administrative side of things and managing and organizing my husbands business. I threw myself into creating schedules, plans and systems which now compile all of my Organized Professional training programs that I still teach today.
This year of creating is the cornerstone of our successful real estate business. I strongly believe that anyone considering a career in real estate should spend the first part of their career (EVEN BEFORE THEY RUN OUT AND START TRYING TO MAKE MONEY), putting bullet proof schedules, plans and systems in place.
In fact, even those who are already in business currently, that are not or have not done this need to STOP EVERYTHING and do it.
Your success and future depends on this. And this alone.
You do not have to take it to the extent that I did and create your own daily schedules and real estate business systems. Find someone else’s and use theirs. Or ask me for mine, I will share. Tweak them to make them your own. You don’t have to re-invent the wheel here. Just find something that allows you to be consistent and intentional.
Getting lost in the day to day or stumbling on what you need to do next will only leave you feeling defeated and unproductive.
There is nothing worse for a real estate professional or business owner then feeling like you aren’t moving forward.
You must always remember that. You are a business owner.
Another secret I attribute to my success was just that sentence. I have always treated my position as a company of which I was the CEO.
I will share more about how I used this principle in life and in business in a further series.
For now, if I can offer you any piece of advice it would be this:
Start where you are and use what you have.
To change the course of your real estate career, your success and your life TODAY you must:
- Create a daily schedule that includes tasks that must be done to move you forward.
- The first thing you must do every single day is some form of lead generation. Then a business growth, client care and communication task. Every day. No matter what.
- You must know exactly what your goals are and how you plan to achieve them
- Put systems in place for virtually everything that you do so it becomes systematic, predictable and intentional
- Stay on course a minimum of 80% of the time. Shoot for 100% but never below 80%
- Reward yourself for doing so
And last but certainly not least:
- Treat your business as it were a job to which if you didn’t do what you were supposed to do every day you would get fired.
Because although as a self employed real estate agent, essentially you can’t get fired but if you don’t do what you are supposed to do each day, every day, to the best of your ability you wouldn’t get paid. And, well… that’s kinda the same thing. Isn’t it?
